The literacy strategy for KS3 is developing from the literacy strategy for key stage 1 and 2 but will be called Language for Learning. All of us are teachers of English and in striving for high standards in geography, we cannot avoid the fact that communication of many geographical ideas will be in the form of writing. Higher standards will partly be achieved by extending pupils' confidence, accuracy and clarity in their writing. It will also be supported when teachers help pupils to apply models and structures of writing with a real audience, real purpose and real outcome. A further leap will be achieved if enjoyment and confidence in doing written geography.
Well here is a
policy
with many very good features for you to peruse,
understand and act upon. With thanks to Gary Dawson at Fairoak High School,
Rugeley for putting up his ideas to stimulate your thoughts.
The first aspect of this policy is that pupils need to be exposed to a range
of texts so that they can understand how the different genres look in
geographical writing. This exercise illustrates how to structure a reading and
analysing travel writing exercise. This is also in preparation for their travel
writing assessment on Kenya.
