Investigating Health of North Staffordshire?

Did you know?

• Britain has the highest rate of breast cancer in the world. It is the most common form of cancer in women, with 35,000 new cases diagnosed every year.

• Maps of Breast Cancer of the UK show this pattern but why?

• Stoke-on-Trent has been called 'Sick City' but is that fair?

• There were 2,829 deaths in Stoke-on-Trent during 1997. Diseases of the circulatory system account for 43% of deaths, cancers are responsible for a further 25%, while 15% are attributed to disease of the respiratory system.

• This is the map of Stoke-on-Trent and the pattern of Coronary Heart Disease again but why?

• In Stoke-on-Trent it is estimated that 21.3% of all deaths occurring between 1-Jan-1994 and 31-Oct-1998 were attributable to smoking. This is equivalent to approximately 600 deaths per year in Stoke-on-Trent.

There is plenty more where this came from.

The important question is not only 'What is health like in North Staffordshire?' and 'How is it different in different places?' but also 'What could be done to improve health overall and reduce health inequalities?' Here eight teachers, both science and geography teachers have engaged pupils of all ages in these questions.  They have attempted with the help of colleagues to devise schemes of work and lessons appropriate to age and ability.  We hope you will use the teaching materials in your curriculum and if you adapt or develop them please let us have them.
