Christina Kamali offers this mix and match grid to help youngsters get their key terminology sorted! Key terminology grid.

4 fig grid references

Lucy Wright, the Marches School, noticed that there aren't many map skills resources on SLN. Here is a lesson from Lucy on 4 figure grid references which starts with a chess scene from Harry Potter. (Scene 28 on the DVD). Lucy says it seems to work really well with her Y7 classes

Food and farming

2007 - 2008 is the year of Food and Farming, so it is timely that we think about how and where our food is produced and how it reaches the shelves and our kitchens! Anna Moverley,  Quintin Kynaston School in London, has sent in a Food Miles PowerPoint and accompanying pupil response sheet.

Simon Derrick recommends this website which is promoted on packs of pineapple from Waitrose and lets you find out about the farm where the product comes. The website is called Caretrace and the link is www.waitrose.caretrace.com I think it would be a great idea for kids to bring pineapple into school and then use the site to learn about where it comes from!

Andy Wilson, Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Ashbourne, Derbyshire and 3 other teachers, travelled to the Windward Islands with FACE to investigate Fairtrade in the Banana Industry. As a result they have produced creative resources for Windwards bananas The work is now complete and is well worth looking at.

Millennium Development Goals

Sarah Hack, formerly of Bishop Stopford's School, Enfield, shares her PowerPoint presentation to introduce students to the 8 Millennium Development Goals for 2015. The illustrations (I won't spoil what they are for you) were a huge source of discussion amongst her pupils - why had the artist chosen that design?  For homework Sarah asked them to design their own for one of the targets. Read more about the goals on the UN website.

Development Trumps

I've been using this game for several years and at a course today in Glasgow all of the other teachers I explained it to were very excited by its simplicity and urged me to let others know.  The idea is here. Doug Anderson, Blairgowrie High School
