Malaysia miscellany

Group photo.jpg (530530 bytes)

No trip is complete without a group photo taken in an appropriate setting; here we are with the Petronas Towers behind us! (RGJ)

Malaysia map 167.jpg (464520 bytes)

Malaysia map (RW and RGJ)

In flight navigation 057.jpg (449637 bytes)

The screens on the flight charted our progress through the section of the Earth in darkness (RW and RGJ)

In flight screen 056.jpg (594942 bytes)

Another screen showed the direction of Mecca to enable Muslims on board to pray. (RW and RGJ)

Serian wet market 2.JPG (842268 bytes)Serian wet market.JPG (839466 bytes)

Pigs head.JPG (807728 bytes)

Not everything in the market was appealing! (CC)

KFC at Serian.JPG (987455 bytes)

While it is not so surprising these days to find "westernised fast food outlets" almost everywhere, the mock Tudor architecture of the buildings looked strage in the small town of Serian. (CC)

logging.jpg (878742 bytes)

Logging; there are very strict controls now about the quantity of trees which can be cut down (CC)

HEP Dam at Batang Ai.JPG (815980 bytes)

Batang Ai river was flooded in 1985 to create the region's first HEP plant. This was controversial because it destroyed 10 longhouses and damaged flora and fauna. Now it provides a waterway access to Nanga Sumpa. (CC)

Head lights 003.jpg (240422 bytes)

You've left your head lights on! We were asked to bring torches as there is no electricity at Nanga Sumpa. (RW and RGJ)

 At fish restaurant.jpg (58346 bytes)

The group split up for a meal one evening in Kuching; the "veggies" went to a Chinese restaurant; these are some of the rest of the group enjoying their meal (and beer!) at a fish restaurant. (CS)

 Boeing 747.JPG (898132 bytes)

We flew courtesy of Malaysian Airlines on a Boeing 747, from Heathrow (CC)

 Power Station.JPG (836071 bytes)

 Power Station near Putrajaya (CC)

Thanks to Discover the Living Planet and Borneo Adventure for their splendid organisation and a great trip.
