DURING THE VISIT

DAY 1 - GROUP WORK : URBAN GEOGRAPHY IN VALLETTA.

The party is organised into groups of approximately 4/5 students and given an area of Valletta to study. This not only helps all students who will be using Valletta for their studies but also helps all students to practice their fieldwork gathering skills. Data to be collected includes:
a. Land use transects - set against urban models
b. Pedestrian flows
c. Field sketches
d. Environmental surveys (dust, noise, litter & bi-polar

DAY 2 GROUP WORK : COASTS & TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

1. Bus/mini-bus to Ramla and Golden Bay. Here we do a variety of data collecting which includes:
a. Beach mapping
b. Amenity survey
c. Beach pollution
d. Water pollution
e. Beach management issues
2. Bus/mini-bus to Mdina. Here we mainly concentrate on traffic management within the ‘Silent City’. Again techniques are used to develop confidence and problem solving to help students when their own data
collection will need to take place over the next four days. Data collecting to be used:
a. Questionnaires
b. Pedestrian survey
c. Activity survey
d. Traffic survey
Groups then prepare evening presentations to display data and assess data collecting techniques in preparation for their own field studies.

DAY 3 & 4

Each student has two full days to collect their data, All students work in pairs for safety reasons and staff visit groups during each day. If problems arise staff are available to help and give advice. All students to report to staff each evening to sort out any problems.

DAY 7

If time permits - collect any missing data.
