Brazil's FlagThe 7-11 Brazil Guide

We need to get out the closet with this massive country. Did you know it can snow in Brazil? Did you know it is in the top 10 largest economies in the world. Did you know that it has the biggest ethnically Japanese population outside Japan?  Don't forget to go to the rainforest links for stuff on the Amazon.

1.For an an overview, you can't do better than Meu Brasil  from Sergio http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~sergiok/brasil.html#start The links on Sao Paulo are especially good. I liked this short profile of Sao Paulo State http://members.aol.com/pochetti5/sampa-brazil.html

2. Rio Images etc. Thanks to Kevin Moloney for allowing us to use these images of Brazil in our teaching. Some pupils may find one or two images disturbing. Please be aware that this material has the following copyright notice. Kevin Moloney has some more essays on Rio and Brazil on his new site.

Use of the material found on this web site shall be limited to use in Geography classes at the Staffordshire or other UK state schools. Material must be presented as seen unless otherwise approved by the creator -- Kevin Moloney -- and cannot be copied or reproduced in any other form without prior permission.

3. Rio de JaneiroLive cameras and images www.iis.com.br/~mbotelho/
In addition to Kevin Moloney's work there is:
An overview www.uoregon.edu/~sergiok/brasil/rio.html
The state government www.governo.rj.gov.br/Portalingles/
The city government www.rio.rj.gov.br/  has a virtual tour
This explains the structure of Rio and means you can discuss the city
Ipanema - www.ipanema.com/  a rich south zone suburb
Vigario Real a poorer favela www.kevinmoloney.com/port/essay/essay.html
Favela Project Brazil http://web.mit.edu/urbanupgrading/upgrading/case-examples/ce-BL-fav.html

4. Brazilian Embassy in London
The Brazilian Embassy website has a Children's Zone which includes resources about Brazil in the classroom, including a Quiz Game (win a trip to Brazil in 2002!) There is also a teacher's guide.
5.The Brazilian Space Agency  INPE has a report about defoestation and has a database of satellite imagery http://www.grid.inpe.br/ and  Dinamica de uso da terra na amazonia www.dpi.inpe.br/dalves/lucc2.html has photographs of de- forestation in Rondonia - Amazonia. Good variety for worksheets. Written captions are in Portuguese but they can be understood.
6.School links with Brazil
The Central Bureau's North South Linking Team aims to help schools and colleges set up partnerships with schools in Latin America, Africa, the Caribbean and South Asia. Such links develop global perspectives in the curriculum and provide a direct and relevant way of finding out about the lives of other young people.
7. Can you name one?
