The 7-11 Tectonics, Volcanoes and Earthquakes Web Guide

If you disagree with this list, then propose another site yourself.  These are NOT just online learning resources and there will be an element of surprise because at SLN we are thinking out side the box.  Start at number 11, why not!

Lucy provided us with this fun definition: A volcano is a big mound of rock that spits out lava when bad tempered

1. The USGS http://www.usgs.gov/ has many sites that are relevant and useful. The schools site for students and teachers is a good starting point.  http://www.usgs.gov/education/index.html

Then there are all the specialist sites

This is place to get several different plate tectonic animations. http://www2.nature.nps.gov/geology/usgsnps/animate/pltecan.html

egg with cracked shell  2. Mountain maker, earth shaker is an online interactive graphic which allows you to move the Earth's Tectonic plates. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aso/tryit/tectonics/
Rocky Stories3.Volcano World http://volcano.und.nodak.edu/ is still the best - reference point for any volcano in the world.
4. Fieldtrips to volcanoes www.educeth.ch/stromboli/index-en.html a virtual one perhaps up Stromboli or Mount St. Helens. The climb will puff them out. Please make sure you do a risk assessment.  There are links to Etna too. There are video clips and 3D animations.  Many other links too.
5. British Geological Survey www.bgs.ac.uk

It has a great report on the Dudley Quake to dispel myths about quakes happening at plate margins only. You can also find out if there has been a minor quake near you. This link was recommended to us by Stuart Hitch who says ' It is a world leader in many areas of geosciences and is the UK's national centre for earth science information.'

6. Volcano Hell This horizon film is going down well in the classrooms - the youngsters are fascinated in the story about the break through in hazard prediction particularly... how obsessive scientists can become to prove themselves right......and that the evidence was in the seismic trace all the time. http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/horizon/2001/volcanohell.shtml
 7. Volcanolive www.volcanolive.com - allows you to link to currently erupting volcanoes on web cams. This is a good alternative to Volcano World.
8. BBC Broadband Tectonics lessons - you will need a broadband link for this set of lessons .  http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/broadband/tectonics
Scale VI9. The Hong Kong Earthquake Observatory http://www.weather.gov.hk/gts/equake/mms_e.htm has the most fun and interesting cartoons for the Mercalli Scale.
10.Liquefaction - ideal for models and demonstrations. Here you will find lots of animations and video clips. http://www.ce.washington.edu/~liquefaction/html/content.html
11.Fun - Experience California http://sridhar_h.tripod.com/calif.html
