7-11 National Parks UK and worldwide

The National Parks are studied far and wide across the UK.  As we in Staffordshire are part of and nearest to the Peak Park, these come first.

1. The Peak District National Park Authority www.peakdistrict.org gives background information on local issues, where to go, what to see, etc. There are also maps and pictures, environmental issues and conflict. There is an education resource site too. www.peakdistrict-education.gov.uk
2. This database of images from Cressbrook Multimedia www.cressbrook.co.uk/home.htm comes highly recommended by Kate Russell
The Snowdonia National Park is of particular geological interest with its high peaks, steep river valleys and many lakes, all formed over the course of millions of years.3. Other UK National Parks

4.The Association of National Parks www.anpa.gov.uk The Council for National Parks www.cnp.org.uk  discusses the status of the South Downs and the New Forest becoming National Parks.

5. There are two lists of National Parks worldwide www.world-national-parks.net/ www.gorp.com/gorp/resource/US_National_Park/intlpark.htm

Canada's National parks have some fascinating wilderness landscapes Parks Canada www.pc.gc.ca/index_e.asp and Parks Canada http://parkscanada.pch.gc.ca/index_e.asp

6. Loch Lomond and the Trossachs www.lochlomond-trossachs.org is Scotland's first national park. There has been a long campaign to have National Parks in Scotland and more will happen in the future. www.scnp.org.uk
demonstration weekends report coming soon7. Conflict in National Parks is what we study in geography. This is a well designed campaign against the banning of watersports on Lake Windermere. www.waf.uk.com/index.html

Green lanes and 4x4 vehicles are causing conflict too.

newsite.gif (147 bytes)Return to tranquility explains the issues and the need to preserve Windermere as a natural landscape. The Lake District National Park has set up a microsite explaining the issues - including video clips and transcripts - which may be of interest.

8. Upland Limestone from BBC Scotland is a case study for Scottish Higher Geography easily adapted for GCSE. It centres on the Yorkshire Dales.  The round table discussions on issues of conflict is different - a virtual role play! I like the audio clips from the People Bank.

9.Kenya Wildlife Service www.kws.org/parks.htm has links to all National Parks in Kenya and tourism links.

There is also some disquiet about the impact of tourism www.environmentalaction.net/kenya

10.World Heritage Review www.worldheritagereview.org

This magazine from UNESCO has some superb information about protecting natural heritage. This profile of Mount Kenya National Park

11.Can you name one?
