Should Annie Schmidt Leave Windy Creek?

This activity was used by David Leat on a course in Staffordshire several years ago. It introduces pupils to the concept of cause and effect through a geographical event such as migration. Pupils are given some statements on cards, containing Background factors and Trigger factors which might influence the decision a young person might have to make. The statements can be downloaded here (in Word format), use the right mouse button and select save Target as. Copy the statements onto card and cut these up to aid sorting. Pupils should work in pairs as it is important for them to discuss the issues.

  1. Sort through the cards and put them into 2 piles
    1. Background information
    2. Trigger points that might lead Annie to leave
  1. Look again at your trigger pile
  2. Try to put the trigger cards in time or chronological order

  3. What do you think is the most important trigger (reason) that would lead Annie to leave Windy Creek?
  4. Try to explain your answer to your partner

  5. What advice would you give Annie about her future?
  6. You will need to explain why you are giving her this advice!

  7. Do you think Annie will ever return to Windy Creek?

Try to explain your answer to your partner
