How to get better at writing geographically 3

The writing research group is now 13 strong.  We are investigating further  variations and examples.  We are investigating ways of making it motivating and well understood by pupils.  More will appear here soon

Ways that the model can be used:

  • as an intervention at the drafting stage;
  • as a way of understanding the difference between description and explanation;
  • as a tool for selecting sentences to model to the whole class;
  • as a self review tool;
  • as the basis for assessment of a piece of writing;

Ways of helping it to be understood:

  • card sorting activity - matching sentences to the model
  • card sorting activity - making different sentences
  • analogy - using non geographical examples - see below

Gary Dawson and Justin Woolliscroft offers some work in progress versions of the better descriptions and explanations. It takes an analogy approach to the diagrams.

GD-JW Model

Gary Dawson thought of it and Justin Woolliscroft adapted it and did the ICT.

Julie Dale has provided two models that might be used to brief learning support assistants work with pupils and begin to understand more about what a teacher is trying to achieve.

Jon Clarke has offered this self review sheet for you to use with a GCSE trial exam or exam question that relate to descriptions and explanations.

Joe Ball from Chasetown high has sent in a version of the judgements model for GCSE Decision Making Exercises.
