From our Flood Correspondents

If you have any stories in particular or images about floods please let us know.

Flood protection in Bewdley on the River Severn

Brian Thomas from Bewdley High School, right on the Rivern Severn has kindly offered a few images of the flood protection scheme now in place following the 2000 floods see below . This was a trial of the demountable scheme.

01.jpg (80932 bytes) 04.jpg (31080 bytes) 07.jpg (47009 bytes) 08.jpg (52155 bytes) 20.jpg (42448 bytes) 12.jpg (35580 bytes)

Next will be it being tested!  Many thanks to the photographer Ben Norwood.

Brian Thomas offered this perspective too. Why not ask if these new barriers make things worse for worse for people downstream? Well the publicity/ advertising for the demountable barriers would indicate not. ( I remember the local MP stating that he had been told that the barrier would not significantly affect water levels downstream or on the other side of the river ) Also I have not heard any complaints that houses/ premises had been affected by the barrier, Although the 2000 flood led to waters coming very close to parts of Bewdley High School so even a small displacement of a really bad flood could lead to some ill effects.

Incidentally, locals in Bewdley maintain that the flooding became more frequent when dredging of the river ceased. Dredging ceased sometime between the 1940s and 1960s, depending on who you ask!

Rivers don't flow upstream ... do they?

They do in Gloucestershire!

The Severn Bore is one of Britain's few truly spectacular natural phenomena. It is a large surge wave that can be seen in the River Severn up as far upstream as Gloucester.

The shape of the Severn estuary means the water is funneled into an narrow channel as the tide rises, thus forming the large wave. The river's course takes it past Avonmouth where it is approximately 5 miles wide, then past Chepstow and to Sharpness where it is approximately 1 mile wide.  By the time the river reaches Minsterworth it is less than a hundred yards across, maintaining this width all the way to Gloucester.

As well as the width of the river decreasing rapidly, so does the depth of the river also change rapidly, thereby forming a funnel shape. As the incoming tide travels up the estuary, it is routed into an ever decreasing channel. Consequently the surge wave or bore is formed.

The Severn Bore has its own website - for maps and pictures and dates and times!

Watch out for the floods! They have unknown hazards!

Thanks to Pete Raper for this. If anyone can tell me where this comes from, I would be grateful. Russ Hughes contacted me from the Isle of Wight to say he is the creator of this bit of fun - well done.

New - floods  during and after

Flood1.jpg (69691 bytes)  Bridgnorth3.jpg (98881 bytes)

We have been back to take photographs of Bewdley and Bridgnorth in June 2001 in exactly the same places.  Look at the flooded and after pages.

Stop and think!

We would like to express our concern for all those people who suffered in the 2000 floods.  It is clearly miserable and we hope you are back to normal soon.

Our House Under Water

Craig, our flood correspondent at Chase Terrace High School sent us this ballad poem and these photographs of a bungalow on the floodplain at Stourport-on-Severn

Click on the image to read on. Why not send in a poem associated with one of these images on these pages.

The Environment Agency has launched Flood Plain maps - it is an example of a GIS  - type in your post code and a map will appear to alert you of the possibility of being at risk of flooding from two different sources (coastal and river flooding).EA Logo

back of the swimming baths.jpg (85660 bytes)There are many flood photographs in here and if you can think of a caption for any of these pictures, a prize will be awarded and will appear here on this website.

There will be a copy of Thinking through Geography for the best caption, funny, thought provoking or serious! wpe2B.jpg (27712 bytes)

These are my favourite pictures so far! Thanks to Howard Bagshaw and Roger Thompson.

Stone

Congratulations to Walton Priory Middle School for responding so quickly to the recent floods and putting some interesting photos of "Stone on the Water" on their website.

Bob Jones from Alleyne's High has produced this mystery about Bob the Builder about Stone which reflects the town's problems with flooding and  sent us this worksheet used as part of a local enquiry into flooding in Stone. Please download the word file here.

Cardiff 1999

Cardiff flood sign.jpg (63369 bytes)Were the Environment Agency all knowing!  Bob Jones of Alleyne's High sent in this picture of a Cardiff flood billboard which was taken a year ago and so does this suggest that the government was "softening us up"?

Flood weblinks - send them in please!

Norman Harrison Deputy Head at Woodhouse High has some superb pictures from the air. The flood coincided with a Royal Navy visit. There is a link from the opening page.

There are some good picture stories at: www.bbc.co.uk/news . Search for Severn, Ouse etc. and you will get some good picture stories.

Search for floods and you will get a global perspective.  I got this headline.

Flooding web enquiry

wpe1.jpg (13836 bytes)Gary Boote has created this new web enquiry for Key Stage 2 about the effect of river flooding. It looks at important questions such as Why do Rivers flood, How does man makes use of rivers in flood, How we can control floods and at some rivers in the news.
