Japan 1 - lots of latitude

All photographs can be used in any teaching and learning context in a school but cannot be used for any other purposes without prior permission of chris.durbin@staffordshire.gov.uk

DH000139.JPG (622080 bytes) 1.0 Why do dogs wear sunglasses in Japan?
DH000073.JPG (359672 bytes) 1.1 How do you explain these two images from the same country?

One tropical at 46.3oC in June

1.2 One almost arctic - well below zero in January. Sapporo twice home to the Winter Olympics.
Weather Map 1.3 The answer lies in Latitude. Ishigaki is at latitude 24oN and not even on this temperature map of Japan. Hokkaido is at latitude 45oN. Dark blue at the top on this map. The distance from Ishigaki to Kyushu [the big southerly island] is the almost as great as the distance from Kyushu to Hokkaido. Investigate further by clicking on the weather map and you might look at maps at www.multimap.com
1.4 If you would like to see more images of Hokkaido then try this rather charming site but turn off the sound! It belies the view that Japan is crowded and urban.

DH000013.JPG (348123 bytes) 1.5 Back to Ishigaki - a coral island close to Taiwan. The most southerly city in Japan.
DH000098.JPG (469882 bytes) 1.6 Tropical white beaches - warm bath azure sea
A055.JPG (424649 bytes) 1.7 Rare turtles breed on the beaches
DH000065.JPG (511453 bytes) 1.8 and crabs scuttle across the sand
DH000015.JPG (436508 bytes) 1.9 The reef at low tide
DH000023.JPG (554092 bytes) 1.101.10 The reef at low tide with tropical fish and corals This black object is a kind of shell fish (or some sort of animal), not corals.
DH000026.JPG (639983 bytes) 1.11 Old coral rocks are exposed at low tide
A112.JPG (463655 bytes) 1.12 Any doubt that it is tropical - Mangrove swamps
A090.JPG (448380 bytes) 1.13 It is a forested island with buttress root trees.
DH000054.JPG (411174 bytes) 1.14 Now it is clearly for tourists - in glass bottomed boats
A140.JPG (437144 bytes) 1.15 Traditions and music and Sake.
DH000020.JPG (713393 bytes) 1.16 Tropical Fruit, Pineapples, Mangos and Bananas.
A152.JPG (444183 bytes) 1.17 Fish galore which as you know the Japanese adore raw with rice.
DH000108.JPG (466620 bytes) 1.18 Orchids that have to be air conditioned down to 270C
DH000132.JPG (389770 bytes) 1.19 Tropical sunsets
DH000139.JPG (622080 bytes) 1.20 And great posers on holiday suffering in the heat and UV index.
