Japan 1 - lots of latitude

All photographs can be used in any teaching and learning context in a school but cannot be used for any other purposes.

	1.0 Why do dogs wear sunglasses in Japan?
	1.1 How do you explain these two images from the same country? One tropical at 46.3oC in June
	1.2 One almost arctic - well below zero in January. Sapporo twice home to the Winter Olympics.
	1.3 The answer lies in Latitude. Ishigaki is at latitude 24oN and not even on this temperature map of Japan. Hokkaido is at latitude 45oN. Dark blue at the top on this map. The distance from Ishigaki to Kyushu [the big southerly island] is the almost as great as the distance from Kyushu to Hokkaido. 	1.4 If you would like to see more images of Hokkaido then try this rather charming site but turn off the sound! It belies the view that Japan is crowded and urban.
	1.5 Back to Ishigaki - a coral island close to Taiwan. The most southerly city in Japan.
	1.6 Tropical white beaches - warm bath azure sea
	1.7 Rare turtles breed on the beaches
	1.8 and crabs scuttle across the sand
	1.9 The reef at low tide

	1.11 Old coral rocks are exposed at low tide
	1.12 Any doubt that it is tropical - Mangrove swamps
	1.13 It is a forested island with buttress root trees.
	1.14 Now it is clearly for tourists - in glass bottomed boats
	1.15 Traditions and music and Sake.
	1.16 Tropical Fruit, Pineapples, Mangos and Bananas.
	1.17 Fish galore which as you know the Japanese adore raw with rice.
	1.18 Orchids that have to be air conditioned down to 270C
	1.19 Tropical sunsets
	1.20 And great posers on holiday suffering in the heat and UV index.
