Living in a mountainous area: Tourism and its effects on people:
A Living Graph Thinking Skills activity
Helen McGhann created this Living Graph
activity while she was teaching at Moorside High School. using the graph
below.
Using the statistics below, construct a climate graph on graph paper.
Remember: temperature is drawn as a line graph and rainfall is drawn as
a bar graph. Always remember to put a title and label your axes.

Now you need to work out where the following events would happen on
your graph. Read each of the sentences below and put it on your graph in
the place where you think it would happen. Use the letters to label the
points so that your graph does not become too crowded.
- Most hotels will be full
- Ski instructors will have to find another job
- Frau and Herr Schmitt will rent their guesthouse out to walkers
and ramblers
- Queues for the ski lift will be very long
- Mountain rescue services will be overstretched
- Hospitals will be under pressure in the emergency wards
- Students will come from abroad to work in hotels
- Rivers will flood and cause lots of damage
- A limit put on the number of skiers on slopes is enforced
- Local councils repair damage to mountain sides caused by overuse
- Now describe the climate in the Alps and then explain how the
climate effects the tourist industry and local people.
