Living on a Hill Farm:
A Living Graph Thinking Skills activity

John Spence from Windsor Park Middle School in Uttoxeter created this Living Graph activity using the graph below. The data is for Beckside Farm in Cumbria. Pupils have to analyse the graph and work out where the statements might be best placed, giving reasons for their decisions. Cut and paste the graph and the sentences into a word processor to make a worksheet for your pupils. You can download the data in Excel format here.

Try to work out, by studying the climate graph, which month fits each sentence best. Write down your reasons for choosing the month you did.

Today is hot and sunny

We had a lot of snow today.

It was sunny but very cold today.

It seems to have rained every day this month.

It is chillier and wetter this month.

The Land Rover got bogged down in the fields today.

The farmhouse fire has not been out for weeks.

The river flooded the low fields today.

The fields were frozen earlier this month but have now thawed.

We have stopped putting out extra food for the sheep.
