newsite.gif (147 bytes)USA Photo enquiry 1- USA or not?

If any one else would like to contribute a picture story like these about anywhere in the world then e-mail kate.russell@staffordshire.gov.uk

All photographs can be used in any teaching and learning context in a school but cannot be used for any other purposes without prior permission of Chris Durbin

All of these photos were taken in Washington DC, Maryland or Virginia in 2004 The idea is to show them to surprise pupils and make the point that the USA is a big country and this is only a very small part of it.
1.1.Remembrance Day USA on 'The Mall' Washington DC
1.2. Colonial Williamsburg, a living museum of British town in the 18th Century.  Notice the Union Flag doesn't have the diagonal red cross on it.  Why?
1.3 Columbia Heights, DC a multicultural community with deprivation and crime. The graffiti is part of action to improve the quality of life in the Inner City.
1.4 Canals of Birmingham? No this is the Cleveland and Ohio Canal, Georgetown, Washington DC. Industrialisation in the USA was not long after Britain.
1.5 Downtown Silver Spring, Maryland, but on the Washington DC Metro and new home of the Discovery Channel. In the foreground new downtowns are being rediscovered.
1.6 The railroad through the suburbs of DC from Docks on the Potomac River carrying freight to Canada.
1.7 Clog dancing in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Note the name 'Klozik' that USA is melting pot of East European people too.
1.8 All over DC, are Pandas. This one outside a chocolate shop attracts tourists and local alike.

1.9 The DC 'Beltway' and the Mormon Tabernacle. Note 55 miles per hour is the speed limit.
1.10 The USA is made up of states which have their own powers. The 'Stateline' here is DC to Maryland.
1.11 'Roll of Thunder' attracted over 300 000 Harley Davidson riders from all over the States and Canada.
1.12 The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Virginia bordering the Atlantic Ocean.
1.13 Inner city Richmond, Virginia, a zone of derelict railway yards, cigarette factories and Diana murals
1.14 Virginia is southern USA, its wet and there are a lot of forests and grass.
1.15 Suburban strips combine two symbols of the USA, the burger and Hollywood
1.16 Shenandoah Valley and you can see why they are called the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia
1.17 Georgetown, an expensive restaurant district with trendy bars and shops.
1.18 'Gas' is cheap. The price of a gallon of petrol in the USA is the same as the price of litre here.
1.19 The General Store, Buena Vista, Virginia a small rural town where many shops are closed down as the hypermarket has taken over.
1.20 The Capitol, The seat of the USA Federal Government. The Senate and the House of Representatives. Many would argue, decisions taken here impact the world over.
