Celebrating Diversity: Life in the UK Today

The
Codsall pyramid of schools celebrated
cultural diversity through visual and performing arts with WOW
(Wonders of the World) week (7th - 11th July 2003.) A group of
artists and performers visited each of the schools and a flavour of
the activities is shown below:
Making Indian wall hangings with Caroline Jariwala at Birches First School. Caroline's website features examples of her work. Other artists and performers taking part were Bhangra Dancers and Nachda Sansaar, Joliba African Drum School, Lenny Alsop Caribbean storyteller, Punch Records Urban Music Hip Hop dance and Lorna Rose making cultural masks. Well done to St Nicholas CE First School, St Chad's CE Primary School, St Christopher's RC Primary School, Lane Green First School, Birches First School, Perton First School and Perton Sandown First School for collaborating so well in this project and to Shirley Kingston Headteacher at St Nicholas First School for co-ordinating the work. Apologies to those schools I didn't get the opportunity to visit! |
Cooper Perry Primary School, Seighford School website20 Y6 pupils were in Malta during Action Week, where they have links with a Maltese school. During the week they experienced the geography, history and culture of the island. They also took part in activities at an art centre and toured the HSBC bank in Valetta. The school is also taking part in a tripartite project and has links with schools in Belfast and Dublin. |

Mosley School, Anslow, Burton and Tower View Primary School, Winshill, BurtonContrasting locality and School linking with Tower View Primary School, Winshill, also within Burton. Tower View children visited Anslow on 18th October and found out about the school buildings and what life was like in the early 1900s. They went on a photo trail around the school building and the surrounding area, including a walk around the village of Anslow, during which they identified places of interest and made field sketches. Mapwork was integrated into this. Anslow children are visiting Winshill on 21st November. Mosley School website

Ridgeway Primary School, ChasetownIn the Summer Term there were school activities for 2 days linking with their summer fete. They celebrated cultural diversity with each class taking a different culture with outdoor performances, presentations and dances, to which the parents were invited.

St Leonard's Primary School, StaffordEach year at St Leonard's was involved in exciting activities which can briefly be described as:- Reception: Food from the British Isles Year 1 / 2: Pupils explored Stafford and found 8 different cultures represented in restaurants and food outlets in just one small part of the town, these included Italian, Mexican, Thai, American, traditional English and French. Year 3 / 4: One class has a link with Tanzania and they explored the culture of the country through looking at artefacts and creating models and pictures. The teacher of the other class comes from Ireland so they found out more about life in both Eire and Northern Ireland. Another class looked at Postcards from the British Isles and visited WOW Year 5 / 6: Investigation into Diwali including linking maths and Diwali patterns. Year 5 looked at the globalisation of the Arsenal football team and were amazed to see where all the players came from!

St Margaret's Junior School, WolstantonYear 3: Weather patterns in the UK - an enquiry into the variety of weather around the country over the week Year 4: Planning journeys between cities and and the variation of transport facilities within cities Year 5: A census of pupils' families and a survey of foods and culture Year 6: Diversity of landscape in the British Isles: producing a collage on a UK outline map.

St Mary's RC Primary School, BrewoodFoundation and Key Stage 1 pupils found out about the diversity of culture and food available in their locality, discover their origins and linking them to the wider world. They did this by collecting menus and other information from take-aways and other food outlets and restaurants in their area; they made a "global cuisine" display on a map of the world; they did a role play in an international bistro; and dressed up in national costumes and sampled global snacks!

St Peter's First School, MarchingtonChildren and staff dressed in national costumes; at lunch time pupils sampled food from different countries and saw a range of cooking and eating utensils. Mapwork was integrated as children identified and located countries.
