Teacher Notes (Plan, Teach, Review)

This exercise has been tried with groups of Year 12 students and has been both successful in maintaining interest and developing a number of Key Skills, particularly working as a group, communication, presentation and using ICT.

Discussions took place with those responsible for the mapping of the data with a view to trying to explain the cause of the quakes. As the region has a lot of mines several of the students considered this as a possibility, however magnitude and depth would rule most of them out. Students were asked to try to use the geomorphology of the region to identify landforms that might be explained by faults which could result in quakes.

The timescale for the exercise was 2.5 hours with a homework to further research quakes (via the Internet, books etc.) and obtain pictures etc. to enhance their presentations.
