A day in Ghana
SLNer Clare Rose has just moved to
Ghana to start a new teaching post. Clare reports on her first
24 hours in Accra!
Hello!
I made it. Safe and sound! Well I have
almost been here 24 hours now, so welcome. It has been a
whirlwind of meeting people, seeing new places and has been
great! I've included a couple of
photos for you, the first one is sugar bread (one of 3 types of
bread, the others are salt and butter) and my first cup of tea
with powered milk - this was my breakfast. Nice.
This
is a photo of us at lunch, I was staying with the
headmistress and her family last night, but they went on holiday
today for a few days so I have now moved in for a few days with
some friends of theirs and will be moving in with Rejoice (lady
sitting next to me at lunch) next week sometime. Having spent
the weekend with the headmistress again. Everyone I have met has
been lovely and very welcoming.
I
was taken around the first school site today and had a brief
walk there and back. This afternoon had a drive tour of Accra,
where the other photos were taken. We went and saw the
Independence Arch, the Atlantic Ocean (and yes, I waved to
Antarctica, my next stop south!), and included two typical road
scenes - the first nearer the centre, the second close to where
I am based.

I am doing OK with the accent. It
sometimes takes me a few tries to get people's names or places
pronounced correctly. I need to learn to listen very carefully!!
Weather - some drizzle this morning and overcast,
felt like home! It's been around 27-28 degrees, so it doesn't
feel hot at all. Sun came out briefly this afternoon. A great
first day. |
