Welcome to the sixth form!

This is the second year of the new course and our second set of students who are about to undertake the perilous journey through to A level Geography. As you notice it is now called AS & A2. It is also organized a little different to the it was in the past. The aim of these WEB pages is to give you an outline of the course, explain how you will be examined and how you can use the World Wide Web to enhance your studies. If you have an suggestions on how the web pages could be improved please see Mr. Brown with your ideas.

AS

Module 1 - Water on the Land
Module 2 - Climatic Hazards and Change
Module 3 - Energy and Life
Module 4 - Population Dynamics
Module 5 - Settlement Processes & Patterns
Module 6 - Economic Activity

How will I be examined?

In your AS year you will obviously study the six modules above and will undertake three examination papers.
Paper 1 - The Physical Paper
Paper 2 - The Human Paper
Paper 3 - The Geographical skills Paper

These will consist of questions similar to GCSE in style with an extra question needing extended writing similar to a short essay.

Both Paper 1 & 2 will be split into two sections, section A will consist of two questions per topic and you will need to answer one. In section B you will have to complete an essay question from a choice of three.

The skills paper will be slightly different but as usual will consist of short data response questions with some needing extended writing.

A2

Module 1 - Coast Processes and Problems
Module 2 - Geomorphological Processes & Hazards
Module 3 - Cold Environments and Human Activity
Module 4 - Population Pressure and Resource Management
Module 5 - Managing Cities - Challenges & Issues
Module 6 - Recreation & Tourism

How will I be examined?

In A2 you will have developed skills and therefore the examinations will be that much harder - similar to the old A level type exam!

Again as in your AS year there will be three examination papers. It will also be similar in that it splits it into the following:
Paper 4 - The Natural Environment
Paper 5 - The Human Environment
Paper 6 - Fieldwork Assessment

Both Paper 4 & 5 will be in two sections where you will need to answer 2 questions from a possible three and in section B one essay question from a choice of 3 possibles.

Paper 6 is slightly different as they give us advance information on a specific topic. You are then prepared for the exam and will be given the questions in the exam hall.

How successful will I be?

Well this will of course depend on YOU! - How hard you work and not forgetting your ability. In the past students who have taken Geography at Blythe Bridge High School have achieved some of the best results in the county. Below are the results from previous years which the Geography Department are justifiably proud!

Results in Geography have been improving over the last six years and students are now achieving grades well above the national averages.

In fact, in the last three years, Blythe Bridge Geography department have been placed in the top two places for results in the county, with the County Inspector acknowledging the excellent results gained.
