Year 10

Module 1 - The Coursework

Coursework is a very important part of the final exam mark. It will be completed during the Autumn Term of Yr 10 and will represent 25% of the final grade. We plan to spend one day at the huge JCB factory at Rocester to investigate the extent to which the building is environmentally friendly. We will collect as much data as possible on things like litter, noise, dust and traffic to help us reach a conclusion. The managers of the factory are always keen to find out about our results!

Module 2 - Tectonic Activity

Here we build on the work done in year 9. We look at the theory of Plate Tectonics, the causes of earthquakes and volcanoes, their main features, why man lives in areas where earthquakes and volcanoes occur how man can minimize the dangers of volcanoes and earthquakes, and a discussion of the differences to people living in rich and poor countries when one of these hazards strike. Finally we look at how Fold Mts are created and what effect they have on man.

Module 3 - Rivers

Here we look at the processes which a river uses to shape the landscape. We look at the features a river creates such as waterfalls, meanders and flood plains and how man’s interference with natural processes leads to the hazard of floods. Finally we look at the impact of flooding on countries such as Bangladesh and the strategies that can be used in the future to prevent these problems.

Module 4 - Agriculture

In our final topic of year 10 we look at the subject of Agriculture. We concentrate on the industry, the factors which control farming and why they differ from one place to another. We then look at the issue of agricultural change which brings both benefits and harm to the environment. Finally we look at a number of case studies from around the world including Britain and South East Asia.

 GCSE - Year 11

Welcome to year 11! - You have survived the coursework and hopefully banked some impressive marks and you have experienced your first assessments as well as your Year 10 exam. You should now be in a position to work out that passing geography at C grade is a very good possibility but that will depend on you and of course a nasty four letter word - WORK.

As well as completing three further modules outlined below, we will have to work on improving map work skills as well as graph work, statistics and exam techniques. During year 11 we will be practicing using old exam questions, completing dreaded assessments and of course there is the Mock Exams to think about!

Module 5 - Ecosystems

In this module we look at the different ecosystems of the world such as deserts and forests. We look at the factors that control the type of ecosystems as well as how they function. We then concentrate on two forest ecosystems, tropical rainforests and coniferous woodlands, how they adapt to the soil and climate. Finally we look at how forests are being misused by man and they should be instead, managed for the future

Module 6 - Population

Here we will look at how the World's population is distributed and the reasons why some areas are more densely populated than others. The rate of population increase is compared in rich and poor countries. We then look at migration and study the reasons why people migrate from villages to cities and between countries. Finally we look at how countries are trying to control population growth.

Module 7 - Development and Interdependence

Our final module looks at the differences between the more economically developed countries such as Britain and the less developed countries such as Bangladesh. We will study how these countries trade goods together and the types they trade. We look at why some countries develop and what prevents others from developing to their potential. Finally we look at how the richer countries could help the poorer countries with aid.

Module 8 - Exam Preparation

Well as you have probably already worked out there is no real module of this title. However it is still one of the most important sections of the exam. During year 11 you will have the opportunities to work on exam questions, map work exercises and general skills so you can impress all those examiners who will be marking your exam paper with what you know!
