The Year 8 Course

Module 1 - Weathering, Rivers & Coasts

Our first module in Yr 8 returns to some of the work covered in Yr 7. It concerns Weathering and Erosion before looking at how rivers shape the land. This is where the Niagara Falls project will be undertaken and you will be challenged to complete a tourist brochure for the Niagara Falls tourist office. We complete this section by looking at how the sea shapes the coast and what is happening on the Holderness Coast where up to 20 metres of coast is eroded each year.

 Module 2 - Primary Activities

In this module we look at the different types of Primary Activities before concentrating on Farming and some of the factors that control it. How farming has changed over the years and how the governments try to control farming. Also in this module we look at some of the effects of Primary Activities such as the disaster at Aberfan where 116 schoolchildren were killed in 1966 when a spoil tip wiped out the school.

Module 3 - Secondary Activities

Our third module looks at manufacturing and industry. We study why people build factories in certain locations and how these ideal locations change over the years. We undertake a case study project on Toyota in Derbyshire to see whether they have built it in the best location. Finally we look at how industry can damage the environment with various types of pollution.

Module 4 - Environmental Concerns

This module develops out of the last segment of Secondary Activities. It asks the questions - Why are we concerned about the environment? and Who cares for the environment? We look at the situation with wild animals in Africa and whether the Antarctic needs protecting. We then look at Man's use of the world's resources and and how this can harm the environment.

 Module 5 - Population

Here we will look at how the World's population is distributed and the reasons why some areas are more densely populated than others. We look at why the population of the world changes and the rate of population increase is compared in rich and poor countries. We then look at migration and study the reasons why people migrate from villages to cities and between countries.

 Module 6 - Mapwork

Traditionally as in year 7 we concentrate on mapwork skills, using a variety of maps, as well as photos to improve your skills. It may even be useful!
