B What is Europe like?
Your task is to investigate the physical
characteristics of Europe. In the first part of this exercise you will just be
looking at the general pattern of lowland, hills and mountains within the continent.
- Look at a relief
map of Europe. Write down what information is shown
on it.
- Compare the information shown on a political
map of the same area. Write down what information is
shown on the political map and write a simple sentence to show the
difference between the two types of map.
- The European Union is made up of 15 states at

Write down the
names of the 15 members of the E.U. in a list. Start with the most northerly
countries and work towards the South.
- Use the relief map to see what kind of
landscapes occur in each country. Next to the name of
each country use one of the following terms to describe its overall
landscape in terms of relief. [make up your own a brief
description if none of these fit!]

- Using an Atlas as well as any other physical
maps that you can access, Name and locate [using
either the country names and compass directions] the main physical features
that make up Europe. The National
Geographic map may help you include other things which make up the
physical landscape.
- Imagine you have a friend who lives in North
America and
plans to join you on a round Europe tour. Your friend has never visited Europe before. Write
the opening paragraph of a letter which introduces your visitor to the main
physical features of the continent of Europe.
