E What types of climate are found in Europe?  Help with what the figures mean

Look at this table of figures which shows the climate for a particular place in Greece:

Temperature figures in degrees centigrade and precipitation [rainfall] in millimetres.

The Temperature figures tell you on average how hot it is in each month;

  1. Look at the January temperature..... it shows you that it is 5°C on average during this month. [Help for °C].
  2. Then look at the July temperature.....it shows you that it is 26°C on average during this month. [Help for °C].
  3. The final figure on the temperature row is the average for the whole year..... this is 15.7 °C in this example.

The Precipitation figures tell you on average how wet it is in each month.

  1. Look at the total figure.... it shows you how wet the place is throughout the year. In this case 470 mm fell in a year. [Help for rainfall totals].
  2. Try to see if there is a pattern of rainfall throughout the year by looking at each season. in this case most rainfall falls in the winter months. [Drawing a graph can help here]
  3. Remember that if the temperature is just above or below 0°C, the precipitation will be snowfall!

Example description for Salonika in Greece:

The winter temperatures in Salonika on average are about 5°C which is on the cool side especially for a place this far South, the figures however go up to 26°C in the Summer - this is very hot as the daytime temperatures will go a good deal higher. With an average of 15.7°C throughout the year, Salonika has a warm Climate overall. The total precip[itation is 470mm which is rather dry; most of this rainfall falls during the winter especially during October - December where over 50mm can be expected throughout each month. Summers are drier with August being especially dry with only 14mm expected. This part of Europe has a Mediterranean Climate which can be summed up as "warm with dry Summers". Salonika's winters are surprisingly cold however!
