December 2002 - RGS Geography of Geography
courses
The RGS-IBG Higher Education Institutions for Geography on a map. If you have
students interested in browsing the websites of geography degrees, then
what better way than to use this map. It needs a plug in called
Autodesk Mapper. seemed simple but as usual school firewalls might
be a problem. http://www.rgs.org/category.php?Page=maineducation
For merely a map of all recognised Universities, University
Colleges and Higher Education Colleges in the United Kingdom except for
residential colleges within universities. Try this clickable map too. http://www.scit.wlv.ac.uk/ukinfo/uk.map.html

October 2002 Neighbourhood Statistics
The
new national statistics site has the new census data information - the
main totals, by nation, by region, by county and by district are now there
including pyramids for all scales. More will be added over the next
sixth months.
But the real coup will be that later more and more data will be added
to:
Neighbourhood
Statistics site - a GIS for neighbourhood statistics site which
has a lot of ward level data but not yet the census - phenomenally
powerful, a bit tricky to find your way around but watch out in the new
year!
For example if you want to know how many family income claimants
there are or how many university entrants there were in a ward, you can
get it. We will be putting on training with QLS in Spring term 2002 for
those who wish to see the power!
Full geographic searching enables this to happen! click to see a
sample! This is the map combined with quick statistics!
September 2002

Gavin Richards and a friend of SLN has created this fresh and
imaginative site with many teaching resources and ideas. There is a
new geo-puzzle which takes some doing and other interactive and
participatory ideas. Photographs are always useful and if you are
starting an electronic image library, then start here.! I especially like
the collection of sound files he has created. Do give it some time
to explore. www.geoexplorer.co.uk

Coal
Mining in North Staffordshire
http://www.staffspasttrack.org.uk/exhibit/coal/
This website is an excellent resource that supports both
the teacher and students involved in the study of unit 22 'Mining'. The unit
of study involves the investigation of the decline in UK coalmining.
The vocabulary is accessible to most children in KS3.
Furthermore, the 'links' page supports gifted and talented students, who can
be stretched by suitable teacher-led tasks exploring the internet further a
field. An interesting feature of the site is the use of sound files -
providing narratives of people who are or were involved in coal production
in North Staffordshire.
April/May 2002 Database Discovery
An ICT / Geography link up between
Bewdley High School, Worcestershire and Haggerston School in Hackney.

This excellent collaborative project is
based on the QCA ICT unit 14, (Global communication - negotiating and
transferring data). Year 9 pupils in two schools in very diverse parts of
the UK worked with their 'remote partner' to collect common, agreed data
for a specific topic. Once the data has been collected, it is transferred
electronically and merged to form a complete data set. Pupils then produce
a report on their joint findings. The results of this work (and some
fascinating images of Bewdley and Hackney) can be found on Brian
Thomas' website.
The project continues .... this year they swapped databases with a
school in Valencia, Spain and continued the email swapping with the London
school. Brian hopes that other schools will be able
to use the downloads and ideas from his site. The
downloads / details on the site will make it easy for other schools to run
this project. If other schools want to swap emails and datafiles Brian
will be glad to help.

Humberside now East Yorkshire coast as well as images of the East
Yorkshire Coast.
Thanks to Peter Humphries, Sir John Nelthorpe School, for all his hard
