Recent and Current Events Worldwide

If you find good websites related to events in the world that are useful for teaching geography. Please let us know.

We believe BBC News www.news.bbc.co.uk is the best source. The clever way current events are linked to background [country information as well as science or politics allows for differentiation beautifully.

An Iranian woman cuts a lonely figure as she walks across the site of a mass grave.December 2003 Earthquake in Bam, Iran

This is a really tragic story - and the death toll keeps rising - my heart goes out to Iranian relatives who are bereaved. If you can have a minutes silence for them on your first day back at school, there are so many messages that will go out. We value the lives of people.

Rescue efforts in AhmedabadJanuary 2001Quake hits India and Pakistan

We would like to express our sadness that the earthquake has claimed lives in India and Pakistan.

Nearly 500 people have been killed in a devastating earthquake that has shaken north-west India and parts of Pakistan. Nearly all the victims from the quake - measuring between 6.9 and 7.9 on the Richter scale - are from the western Indian town of Bhuj, in the state of Gujurat, and the nearby city of Ahmedabad.
