Policy Guidance
Writing a policy?
Try these sample policies for
religious
education and
collective worship.
In grid format, these
policies state the principles that Staffordshire schools should be
addressing in their provision for RE and collective worship. Adding
the school's practice in the right hand column gives a document relevant
to the school which can be updated regularly with changing circumstances.
Alternatively, if a prose
version is preferred, the grid can be used as a rough copy before merging
the principles and practice.

What should schools be working towards?
Recent research into best
practice in the county suggests that RE provision is good when:
|
1. The
subject is seen to be held in high regard by senior managers, and has
equal status with other core and foundation subjects. |
|
2. Teachers
have access to appropriate professional development to support
innovative practice |
|
3. There
is sufficient curriculum time to meet the legal requirement to provide
religious education for all pupils on the school roll (3 to 19) in
accordance with the locally Agreed Syllabus. |
|
4. The
subject leader has a clear overview of the way in which the Programmes
of Study (or a GCSE syllabus at Key Stage 4) are covered at each key
stage. |
|
5. Units
of work are planned thoroughly to meet the requirements of the Agreed
Syllabus and include strategies for differentiation and assessment. |
|
6. Attention
is paid to the Staffordshire Attainment Targets (Issues, Religion,
Meaning and Lifestance) and pupils are encouraged to learn from, as
well as learn about, religion and religions. |
|
7. Pupils
are offered stimulating learning experiences and are set challenging
tasks linked to clear teaching and learning objectives. |
|
8. There
is a wide range of learning resources. These should be selected to
capture the imagination of the learner, including authentic articles
of faith, visits and visitors. |
|
9. Pupils
are supported to develop a mature understanding of Christianity and
other traditions, in accordance with the requirements of the Agreed
Syllabus. |
|
10. Pupils
are encouraged to develop their own perspectives as well as to take
account of the viewpoints of others. |
|
11. Opportunities
and experiences enhance pupils’ perception of RE as being relevant to
their own lives, purposeful and enjoyable. |
