Early Years
Religious
education and Spiritual Development in the Early Years New guidance available A new guidance document, 'Religious Education and Spiritual Development in the Early Years' has been produced for Staffordshire schools and settings. This should be in schools by the end of November 2006. If you are the RE subject leader in a Staffordshire school and your copy has not arrived, please use the contact heather.farr@staffordshire.gov.uk to make a request or to make enquiries about purchasing further copies. The document demonstrates how the Staffordshire approach to religious education and the early learning goals can be used effectively alongside each other to promote pupils’ development. There is practical advice on creating appropriate opportunities for young children to learn about and from religion and to develop their awareness of the spiritual aspects of life. It is important to note that all registered pupils between the ages of 3 and 19 are entitled to religious education. Children in nursery classes and other early years settings are not subject to the requirements of the locally Agreed Syllabus, but they are required to cover the religious and spiritual aspects of the foundation stage curriculum. There is much in the Staffordshire Agreed Syllabus which supports teachers to meet these sections of the early learning goals. There is provision for children in the reception class within the Agreed Syllabus and this should be followed by all community and controlled schools. Resources for religious education in the early years The Staffordshire guidance features twelve plans for the foundation stage, six for pre-reception groups and settings and six for reception classes.
