Not the Titanic!

My photo was taken in Disko Bay, Western Greenland

Sailing among the icebergs of Disko Bay in a local halibut / shrimp fishing boat in the cold light of the midnight sun. Some of the larger icebergs are over 150 metres above the waterline and have taken over 4 years to arrive at the open water from the place where they were released from the active end of the 25 mile long Ilulissat Icefjord. The largest of these icebergs “ground” in the shallower water at the seaward end of the fjord, causing a “log-jam” of floating bergs and frozen sea-ice behind them. Pieces may split off them with a sudden rumble; sending a whaleback hump of displaced water towards the tiny boat, disturbing the eerie silence. In the calm, dark Arctic waters the ice around the edges of the floating bergs is a turquoise green colour and seems to go on down into the depths forever! The word “Titanic” springs instantly to mind!
